We have written last week, that city of Tartu allowed to demolish historical buildings Raatuse 37 and 41. The news flew over the social networks and has brought discussions. The main question was – what does exactly mean, that „historical brick buildings must be saved in the volume and general view“.

Raatuse 49 is located in fifty meters at the same street. It was reconstructed three years ago – firstly demolished, then put together, one floor added. The building was announced to be the best reconstructed apartment building of 2015. The developer says, that it took form him a lot to save historical details. The bricks were disassembled and later assembled by a detailed drawing. It is very possible, that the same will happen to Raatuse 37 and 41.
Some may say, that reconstructed Raatuse 49 looks better than before. And they are right – the house is in good condition. But this is obvious, that this is a different building – one floor higher, with a different plan and even different number of windows on the floor. The main question is – will these modifications look good in the future as well, will the building save its continuity and soul? What is trendy and interesting today (for example an additional floor covered with black metal), may look outdated and ridiculous in the future. And the whole building may look fake. We will get answers to these questions in some twenty years. But in the near future we will see what is going to happen to Raatuse 37 and 41.
